How to Build Self-Esteem and Confidence in Your Child

Confidence in Your Child

.

Raising a child who has confidence and a healthy sense of self-esteem will set them up for a successful journey through adolescence and on towards adulthood.  Ingraining these traits during the childhood years is much easier than waiting to correct a lack of self-esteem later in life. In this article we’ll go over some tips on how to build self-esteem and confidence in your child.

Show Your Child Unconditional Love

Unconditional love will give your child the confidence that no matter what happens you’ll always be there for them.  A child will be less anxious and worried about trying new things or meeting new people if they know they have a stable relationship with their parent.  Without the trust of being loved by their parents it’s much harder to build up a sense of confidence.

Be Judicious With Praise

On the other hand, if you praise your child for every little thing they do regardless of their actions, good or bad, you can end up undermining their confidence when they run into difficult situations.  Be sure to give praise when it’s warranted, but avoid over praising.

Inspire Perseverance

Show your child that good things come to those who persevere.  Make sure to compliment them when they complete a difficult task without giving up.  This will teach them the value of persistence when encountering challenging situations.  By experiencing examples of success due to perseverance your child will become more confident when the going gets tough.

Teach Them To Set And Reach Goals

By helping your child set and meet goals you’ll teach them the process of getting what they want by using visualization, hard work and persistence.  Achieving a goal that they’ve set for themselves is a great way to instill self-confidence. Start with easily achievable goals and reward the child for meeting them.  You’ll teach them a skill they can carry throughout life.

Teach Them To Make Choices

There comes points in everyone’s life where they have to make a difficult choice.  By providing your child with choices you’re setting them up to be confident enough to make those choices and live with the consequences.  Giving your child a sense of control over their life will instill confidence and self-esteem.
